In the tunnel the shadow came closer. The Doctor imagined fearful creatures, Xygons, Daleks, Cybermen, but this creature, this shadow looked different, it looked human. He wrestled with the cuffs but Jack had made sure he would not be escaping. The tapping sound had ceased, he strained his eyes to see into the darkened tunnel but apart from the dripping water he heard nothing until a warm hand touched his arm and a familiar face stepped into the lamplight beaming overhead.
‘Martha.’ He smiled relieved but then the expression dropped. ‘Is it really you?’ He questioned.
‘We need to get you out of these cuffs.’ She proceeded towards him as he pressed his back against the wall, pinching his skin inside the cuffs. ‘Doctor, what are you doing?’ She asked perplexed.
‘I have to know, is it really you?’ He looked into her soft gentle brown eyes, he studied her gentle features, her hair loose around her shoulders.
‘How can I prove that, the Master knows everything about my family, you and he share so much of that?’ She questioned. ‘Now move, let me get these cuffs off.’ She pulled him forward and pulling a key from her pocket, unclipped the Doctor’s hands. A movement of footsteps could be heard further off and Wilf’s voice echoed through the tunnel.
‘Come on Doctor, let’s go.’
‘If he sees I’ve gone, they’ll begin to search, you go, keep yourself safe, I’ll wait until Wilf’s here.’
‘You’re mad.’
‘Not yet, most definitely not yet.’ He watched her run back through the tunnel and out of sight as Jack appeared in a trancelike state with Wilf pushed ahead of him. The Doctor kept his hands behind his back and remained beside the wall, he could see that Jack had no control over his situation, but he did wonder how much influence the Master had had upon his friend.
‘This is ridiculous, I thought you were a friend.’ Wilf complained as the airman pushed him against the Doctor and secured him to the wall.
‘He can’t hear you, Jack’s been hypnotised by the Master.’
‘Why?’
‘I don’t know, but I’m guessing like so many times before, the Master is looking to destroy me.’ The Doctor watched Jack walk back up the tunnel and out of sight.
‘What are we going to do Doctor?’ Wilf asked his voice crumbling into sobs.
‘We’re going to get out of here and then we’re going to get everyone back and then and only then, when I know everyone is safe, I’m going to stop the Master.’ The Doctor spoke victoriously.
‘Just one problem.’ Spoke Wilf. ‘How do we do that when we’re chained to the wall?’
The Doctor grinned and waved a hand at the old man. He looked shocked for a moment but as the Doctor withdrew his sonic screwdriver and released him, the old smile returned and Wilf felt like a young man, full of energy and ready to kick ass once more.
As the Doctor and Wilf ran along the dark tunnel they ran into Martha who stepped from the shadows. She pulled them both into a small alcove that led to another part of the base.
‘It’s a secret location, only a select few from Torchwood know about this.’ She said crawling in through the small opening.
‘I can see why.’ Muttered the Doctor as he crawled along on his hands and knees until all three were fully inside the room. Martha stood up and flicked on her torch, it shone a massive beam of light around the entire office area. The Doctor rose and helped Wilf to his feet. It was a massive communication room, telephones, computers, wires and cables spread along every table and wall. The Doctor walked around the dusty unit where a few lights flickered on and off and a large Perspex map dotted with red and green lights popped on and off like fairy lights on a Christmas tree in the centre of a row of tables. He pulled on his specs and studied it closer, minute details had gone in to every aspect of the map. He pulled off his glasses and glared at Martha.
‘Tell me this isn’t what I think it is.’ He saw her flinch and strode towards her, blinking in the light of the torchbeam.
‘We had no choice, it was either that or let the Master win.’
‘You’ve been manipulating me, putting me through hell, for what reason?’
‘When that worm hole opened up Unit knew something was going on. Malcolm suddenly comes on the scene, a complete unknown who amazingly knows you and has a level of genius way beyond planet Earth, you do have to question how he knows so much.’ Martha replied walking past the Doctor and to the keyboard beside the map. She typed in a code and the entire network link across the map came on, he watched as the computers flickered into life, scenes of his life played back and forth over a period of months.
‘Those prickles of electricity, that pain I went through, you did this?’ He frowned.
‘It was the psychic network, there are a lot of people out there Doctor that need you. The perception filters that we used wouldn’t work on the Master, we needed to draw him out, we needed…..I’m sorry Doctor, but we didn’t have a choice.’
The Doctor turned away and stared at the vast array of monitors along the wall. He saw Donna burn up in front of his eyes and watched Wilf relive the memory again. He spun around and grabbed Martha by the arms.
‘If you’ve been manipulating me, then everything that’s happened, Rose, my clone, Donna, that’s all a lie, isn’t it?’ He prayed for the correct answer.
‘We knew the Master would be reinvented, it was only right wasn’t it that a strong evil force would reincarnate the Master to wreak havoc across the Universe, why not Earth, you’re always here, nearly always. Look it wasn’t just me, Rose was here too, it was all rigged, right across the Universe, all your friends, all your companions, but they got to Jack, I don’t know how he did it, but this thought control….the Master is so strong.’
‘He’s not that strong, this is a clone, manufactured by his wife Lucy, although why she would want to do that I don’t know.’
‘She didn’t.’ Martha replied quietly.
‘What?’
‘Lucy Saxon went mad. She’s locked away in a secure mental hospital. Whoever brought the Master back wasn’t her, but it was a woman.’ Martha typed in another few codes and as the Doctor stared at the screen Martha saw the colour drain from his face.
‘THE RANI!’
‘Who?’
‘The Rani, she’s a, she’s like the Master but I thought she was dead.’
‘It seems like a lot of your race are coming back when you thought they were all gone Doctor.’
‘Earth was never an issue with her, what does she want……oh….oh no.’ He stepped away from the screen and backed towards the wall, pulling the glasses from his face he stared as if into space.
‘Doctor what is it?’ Martha asked.
‘She’s been here all the time, she and the Master, but without him. But, I cremated the Master at the end of the Universe, she’d have had to……..’ Again his words drifted away. ‘No…..No, that can’t be. That’s impossible.’
He paced about the floor watched by Wilf and Martha, they heard him muttering and watched as he ruffled his hair several times while he thought.
‘She came back with me, in the Tardis, she’s a Time Lord/Lady, she’d have access to the Tardis, she’s been here all the time, altering the future, playing with time and science. Malcolm, no wonder he was there, he’s the key, but with every key there has to be a…..’
‘Master.’
The Doctor spun around and looked at Martha and grinned.
‘Exactly.’
Jack lay face down in the pool of water beside the monument as the Master stood over him. He pushed the laser screwdriver back into his coat pocket and faced the soldiers holding Ianto, Gwen and the pizza delivery boy.
‘Lock them up for treason to the crown, and him, his pizza’s stink. You you and you, I want every door, window, shelf, toilet, cubicle icehouse, outhouse, and henhouse overturned until you find me the Doctor and that silly old man. MOVE IT!’ The Master stared at the body of the airman before turning on his heals and following the soldiers out with Ianto and Gwen.
Martha ran to keep up with the Doctor as they took a series of tunnels that made their way back towards the Tardis. She gasped as she saw the body lying face down in the water. The Doctor helped by Wilf turned Jack over and pulled him towards the side. The laser scorch was still visible on his shirt and as the two men heaved him out onto the dry flooring he gulped in air like a fish out of water.
‘Oh my god, he’s alive.’ Wilf stepped back clamping his hands to his mouth in shock.
‘Doctor, Martha, what the hell happened?’
‘Never mind that now,’ struggled the Doctor. ‘Let’s get you aboard the Tardis, come on.’ He pulled him to his feet and all four entered the ship and set her into orbit. Martha handed a cd disk to the Doctor who inserted it into the ships mainframe. The details of which came up on the monitor.
Jack felt alienated from the crew, as Wilf stood beside the Doctor and Martha too avoided eye contact with him and watched a series of codes and passwords filter across the screen, a series of Time Lord jargon twisted and turned, flickered and swirled before their eyes and the Doctor reset his co-ordinates, thirty miles north.
